Hall of Fame Spotlight- Dan Mahoney

Dan Mahoney grew up just a couple of hours
from Newport in Ashburnham, Massachusetts,
and stayed close to home to pitch for the
UConn Huskies baseball. Dan was drafted by
the New York Yankees in the 16th Rd. in 2007
out of HS. Following his freshman season
at Connecticut, Mahoney arrived in Newport
and quickly emerged as one of the premier
pitchers in the New England Collegiate
Baseball League.
Pitching for the Newport Gulls during the 2008
season, Mahoney showcased electric stuff, with a fastball in the mid
90’s and the poise of a future professional arm. The hard-throwing
right-hander dominated opposing hitters throughout the summer and
earned league-wide recognition for his breakout campaign. He posted
a 1.66 ERA in 15 games, with seven (7) saves. He pitched 21 innings
with 36 strikeouts. His standout performance led to Mahoney being
named the NECBL’s “Stephen Strasburg Top Pro Prospect,” becoming
the first player in Newport Gulls history to receive the prestigious honor.
The award further solidified his reputation as one of the league’s top
young talents and a key piece of Newport’s success during the season.
He was named to the NECBL All Star team and named 1st Team All
NECBL.
Mahoney later turned his success in Newport into a professional
baseball career after being selected by the Florida Marlins in the 4th
Rd. of the MLB Draft. He spent two seasons in the Marlins organization
before continuing his professional journey with affiliates of the New
York Yankees. Across his professional career, Mahoney logged
more than 150 innings while recording 113 strikeouts, continuing the
development and promise he first displayed during his memorable
summer in Newport.
Dan is currently working for the Washington Nationals as a roving
Pitching Coach and resides in Lovettsville, Virginia with his wife Laura
and his four children: Elie, Keira, Declan and Dawson.
