Gulls Drop a Tough Matchup Against the Waves

The Newport Gulls hosted the Ocean State Waves for the last time this regular season at Cardines Field for American Heroes Night. Newport coming off of the extra inning loss to Mystic on Thursday looked to get back into the winning column. Victor Frederick (St.Johns) got the start for Newport and Kayden Faulcon started on the bump for Ocean State. 

Two home runs in the first inning started the game off with some fireworks as the Waves and Gabriel Milano launched a two run slam in the top of the inning but Newport's own Colby Wallace (East Carolina) countered with his own three run shot to take the lead early on. 

It was a pitchers duel until the top of the fifth inning where the Ocean State Waves got the best of both Victor Frederick and the Gulls first reliever in Jake Lenahan (Holy Cross). A pair of doubles and a single from Ocean State gave them the 5-3 lead in the fifth inning and took the momentum for the second half of the game. 

From the fifth inning on, it was all Waves. The Ocean State pitcher in Will Burns, Dylan McCarthy, and Trey Telfer shut down this Gulls offense and took home a 6-3 win over their in-state rival and continued on the playoff push. 

The Newport Gulls have a much needed off day tomorrow before hitting the road on Sunday up to Holyoke, Massachusetts to face off against the Valley Blue Sox. The Gulls next home game is Wednesday, July 15th versus the Martha's Vineyard Sharks with first pitch at 6:35 pm on ESPN+.
