Newport Cruises Past Keene in 19-2 Domination

The Newport Gulls dominated the Keene SwampBats with a 19-2 win on Friday, July 17. The
Gulls moved to 20-13-1, while the defending champion SwampBats fell to 17-17-1.
Before the game, over 50 Gulls alumni returned to Cardines Field to celebrate. In addition, the
ten incoming members of the Gulls 2026 Hall Of Fame class were honored and delivered
ceremonial first pitches. Former Newport mayor Richard Sardella, Gulls field manager Carmen
Carcone, head trainer Norm Provost, and players Troy Dixon, Ben Roberts, Dan Mahoney, Mike
Tasmin, Adam Wilk, Chase Reid and Yale Rosen.
Victor Frederick got the start for Newport and worked efficiently through five innings, only
striking out two but limiting Keene to one hit and one unearned run. Frederick earned his
second win of the season in his second start and fifth appearance. Frederick’s Keene
counterpart Jack Davis was not nearly as solid. While he fell victim to an error, he walked three
and hit Ryan Novak (Miami OH) with a pitch. After going down 1-2-3 in the first inning, the Gulls
bats exploded with a seven run second, batting around and culminating with a three run double
from Braxton Tramel (East Carolina).
Micah Kendrick got Keene on the board in the top of the third, scoring Dylan Fitzsimmons on a
fielder’s choice.
After being held scoreless in the first and third, Newport scraped across at least one run in
every inning, everyone in the lineup had at least one hit and eight of them had at least one RBI.
Peter Mershon (Coastal Carolina) drove five men home and Gus Gandy put together a three hit
